Bionic Vision Technologies (BVT) is a private Australian company developing visual prostheses to restore vision to the blind. The devices consist of a camera, attached to a pair of glasses, an externally worn vision processing unit and an electrode array implanted behind the retina. The camera captures the image and transmits the data first to the vision processing unit and then to the electrode array.
The technology has been developed by Bionic Vision Australia, a research consortium of five academic institutes which has received $50m of Australian Federal Government funding over a 5 year period and together with in-kind contribution by the institutes has had funding of over $100m. Among the large multidisciplinary team of researchers are a number of pioneers of the original Cochlear technology. BVT holds the licenses to the patents surrounding the technology and is now working to progress the technology to commercialisation.
Our product pipeline consists of devices which aim to increase mobility and independence of patients and enables increasing visual acuity.
BVT aims to be the world leader in the development and production of suprachoroidally positioned retinal prosthesis for restoring vision to the blind and slowing the progression of retinal degeneration.
